Caustic Soda Flake specification:

Caustic Soda Flake also known as sodium hydroxide flakes. Flake mass is an odorless, white crystalline solid with a density of 2.13 g/mL, and melting point of 318 °C. It`s white color, very hygroscopic, also very soluble in water and alcohol. The formula is NaOH. Technical sodium hydroxide flakes are obtained by evaporating of liquid caustics soda А grade.

NaOH also used in organic synthesis processes, petroleum products refining, textile industry in production of viscose silk and in bleaching fabrics It uses in paper and aniline industry, soap making, aluminum and sodium metal production, soluble glass, alkaline accumulators also in Trilon B.

Sodium hydroxide widely uses in large scale usages such as pulp and paper manufacturing, in production of soap and detergents as well as in water treatment plants. It is used in Bayer process of aluminum manufacture as well as to remove sulfurous impurities from crude oil. NaOH also used in manufacture of biodiesel, rayon and cellophane; as a catalyst for the trans esterification of methanol and triglycerides and as paint stripper on wooden objects.
It mainly used for pH control, acid neutralization, off-gas scrubbing and as a catalyst in various industries like pharmaceutical, metal degreasing, agrochemical, dyes, paints and polymer. It is also used in refining vegetable oils, rubber reclamation, metal processing, disinfectants, adhesive preparations, paint removers, rubber latex stabilizers and in stabilization of sodium hypochlorite.

Production:

NaOH also produced as a 50% solution by variations of electrolytic chloralkali process. Cl gas  also produced. Solid NaOH is got from this solution by evaporation of water. It`s mostly include as flakes, prills, and cast blocks.

I treating sodium carbonate with calcium hydroxide in a metathesis reaction. Sodium hydroxide is soluble while calcium carbonate is not.

Ca(OH)2(aq) + Na2CO3(s) → CaCO3 ↓ + 2 NaOH(aq)
This process also was superseded by Solvay process in 19th century. That was in turn put by chloralkali process which we use today.

 Caustic Soda In addition  produced by combining pure sodium metal with water. Furthermore, by products are hydrogen gas and heat, often resulting in a flame, making this a common demonstration of the reactivity of alkali metals in academic environments. Na isolates by decline electrolysis of sodium compounds including NaOH. However this process is not economic.

Caustic Soda Flake Preparation:

Sodium hydroxide is industrially produced using the electrolytic chlor-alkali process, in which electrolysis of aqueous sodium chloride solution gives chlorine gas and sodium hydroxide. NaOH is obtained as 48-50% solution, then dried to give sodium hydroxide flakes.

2 NaCl + 2 H2O → 2 NaOH + Cl2 + H2

 

Health effects/safety hazards:

It`s strong and highly corrosive alkali, which readily decomposes living tissues. Skin contact of NaOH solutions can result in severe chemical burns, and eye contact can cause permanent blindness. Solid NaOH reacts with water and acids in a very exothermic reaction, and can cause burns through splashing.
