Caustic Soda Flakes are one of the most popular alkalis in the world, with approximately 55.5 million tons manufactured annually to meet industrial needs.

Sodium Hydroxide is classified as a strong chemical base because it completely dissolves in water. It is solid in white flakes, also known as caustic soda, and is an inorganic compound consisting of sodium. It is a highly caustic base and alkali that decomposes proteins at ordinary ambient temperatures and may cause severe chemical burns.

Sodium hydroxide is used in many industries, including chemical manufacturing, petroleum refining, and cleaning compounds. Caustic Soda Flakes typically appear as white or nearly white pellets, flakes, sticks, or fused masses. Lye is clear or slightly turbid, colorless or slightly colored, strongly caustic, and hygroscopic. When exposed to air, it absorbs carbon dioxide (CO2), forming sodium carbonate.

Uses of Caustic Soda Flakes

Caustic soda flakes are widely used in various industries and applications:

  1. Household Products: Caustic soda is added to household agents, shampoos, and soaps. It is also used in paper, polyester fiber, and cardboard factories, as well as in aluminum manufacturing for pickling metal.
  2. Food Industry: Food-grade caustic soda is used as an additive to make crunchy crusts and as a washing agent to break down fats in food factories. It is also used in peeling fruit.
  3. Cleaning: Caustic soda is used for cleaning laboratory pipes and as a solvent for biodiesel fuel.
  4. Chemical Testing: It is used for testing reactions at chemical plants and has applications in medicine for burning off skin growths.

Precautionary Statements

Caustic soda is a strong alkaline substance and can cause severe burns if it comes into contact with the skin, mucous membranes, or eyes. Immediate medical attention is required if exposure occurs. It reacts with almost any chemical compound and can form salts, water, and complex compounds.

Packing of Caustic Soda Flakes

Caustic soda flakes are typically packed in 25 PP bags to prevent moisture absorption. For added protection, 50 PP bags of caustic soda flakes are placed in jumbo bags. Cargo can be pelletized by shrinking according to customer orders. Caustic soda flakes are offered in jumbo bags or placed on a pallet and shrunk with PP bags.

Uses and Hazards

Caustic soda flakes are primarily used as an industrial raw material. The chemical industry uses approximately 56% of sodium hydroxide, while the paper industry uses 25%. It is often used in liquid form for easier handling and lower cost. Solid sodium hydroxide is used for the production of sodium salts, detergents, organic synthesis, and pH regulation. It is also used in Bayer’s process of aluminum manufacture.

Crude oil with poor quality can be treated with caustic soda flakes to remove sulfurous impurities in a process known as caustic washing. The reaction between caustic soda flakes and weak acids like mercaptans and hydrogen sulfide produces removable non-volatile sodium salts, which can create toxic waste that is difficult to manage. Sodium hydroxide produced by the membrane cell process is typically referred to as membrane grade.
