Oxidized Bitumen Grades

Oxidized Bitumen Grades

Oxidized Bitumen, also known as blown bitumen or Blown Asphalt, is a type of bitumen that has been modified by blowing air through it at high temperatures. This process alters its physical properties, resulting in a more rubbery, durable, and temperature-resistant material. The product is graded based on its softening point (°C) and penetration value (dmm), which define its performance characteristics. These grades are commonly expressed in the format Softening Point/Penetration — for example, 85/25 means a softening point of 85°C and a penetration of 25 dmm.

Each oxidized bitumen grade is tailored for specific industrial uses based on its hardness, flexibility, and thermal resistance. For instance:

  • 75/25 and 75/35 are softer grades used in flooring, waterproofing membranes, and general sealing. Their flexibility makes them suitable for applications that require movement without cracking.

  • 85/25 and 85/40 are mid-range grades widely used in roofing membranes, pipe coatings, and joint sealants. These grades offer a balance between flexibility and durability, suitable for moderate thermal environments.

  • 90/10 and 90/15 are harder, more stable grades ideal for protective coatings, bituminous paints, and corrosion-resistant layers in industrial settings.

  • 95/25, 105/15, and 110/30 are high-performance grades designed for use in high-temperature applications, such as electrical cable insulation, industrial adhesives, and waterproofing under intense heat or chemical exposure.

Blown Asphalt is non-penetrative, meaning it doesn’t flow at service temperatures, making it ideal for vertical and sloped surfaces. It also exhibits excellent resistance to aging, water, and chemical attack.

When selecting a grade, factors such as climate, application surface, and expected thermal loads must be considered. For cold climates, a softer grade like 75/25 may prevent cracking, whereas hotter conditions may require a higher softening point like 105/15.

Blown Asphalt is a critical material in infrastructure and industrial sealing due to its thermal stability, strong adhesion, and weatherproofing capabilities. The variety of available grades ensures that users can select the right balance of hardness and flexibility for virtually any project requirement.
