The Bitumen mode is dependent on temperature. Temperature-vs-stiffness relationship of bitumen is dependent on the type of crude oil. Also its refining method. Bitumen 60_70 means the penetration value is 60 – 70 at standard test.
In addition, Bitumen is applicable for production of hot mix asphalt for bases and pavements. Furthermore, it uses in road construction. It`s produced by aeration on vacuum bottom. Also the raw material used for making bitumen left in vacuum distillation column in oil.
Bitumen 60_70 Introduction:
Bitumen is a sticky, black and highly viscous liquid or semi-solid form of petroleum. Furthermore founds in natural deposits (natural bitumen). Also provides as petroleum.
In addition, bitumen penetration used as glue or binder mixed with aggregate particles to create asphalt concrete. This is primary use (70%) of asphalt/bitumen. Also it uses for bituminous waterproofing products, including production of roofing felt and for sealing flat roofs.
Asphalt and bitumen often used interchangeably to mean natural or manufactured forms of substance. Also asphalt cement refined residue from distillation process of selected crude oils.
Based on usage, bitumen can be divided into two groups:
- road construction or thin bitumen
- building bitumen (roof insulator) or hard bitumen
90% of bitumen used in constructions and 10% for insulation uses. Road construction bitumen is mostly classified according to its penetration. In addition, Penetration rate of bitumen shows its strength and hardness. It`s defined as penetration grade unit of one vertical standard needle in one bitumen sample, in certain time and weight on needle and temperature. The penetration measured 25C with 100 gram weight and in 5 seconds.
Road construction bitumens made in Iran are Bitumen 60_70 and ’85_100”. The numbers represent the range of bitumen penetration rate. Bitumen is hydrocarbon substance which is black to dark brown and quite solvable in carbon sulfur. It is solid in normal environment temperature but in increased temperature it first becomes paste and then liquid. It has two important properties, impenetrable against water and adhesiveness which makes it an important material for application.
