Oxidized Bitumen also known as hard bitumen, blown bitumen, bitumen oxide and hard asphalt. It produced by passing air through the penetration grades. This process cases bitumen be more rubbery than its original formula. Oxidized Bitumen 90/15 and other grades are simply harder bitumen. Hard bitumen under controlled temperature conditions is widely used as an anti-slip layer compound in the piling industry, for manufacture of roofing felts, the roofing and waterproofing industries, for sound dampening felts and under carriage sealant in the automotive industry, electric cable joint protection, joint filling compound, sealant compound and many others. Also used in sealing saw cuts and joints where expected movements are minimum. It is also used in the manufacturing of bituminous marine mastic for the oil & gas pipeline joints.
Oxidized bitumen CAS No. 64742-93-4 also known as air blown or air refined asphalt has been treated by blowing air through it at elevated temperatures to produce physical properties required for industrial use of the final product.The blown bitumen have been modified by the passage of air , under specific pressure and temperature depend on which grade we need to produce .Oxidized bitumen is of a rubbery consistency and has a higher softening point and greater resistance to flow than a straight run bitumen of the same hardness.Oxidized asphalt are typically used in roofing operation,pipe coating, undersealing for portland cement concrete pavements,hydraulic application and manufacture of paints.
After dynamic – static experiments, an attempt was made on bitumen mechanical behavior. It combines main factors in simple system. This was possible in a nomograph. So, bitumen deformations calculated as a function of stress, time and temperature. For correlation with standard test‐methods, ring‐and‐ball temperature, penetration index are suitable parameters. Nomograph enables average behaviour of a grade to calculated with an accuracy sufficient.
Another feature of Nomograph is the possibility of giving an interpretation of other routine tests. Furthermore, bitumen grades produced depend on weather conditions. Hard Asphalt grades are suitable for sealing saw cuts. Also in joints with a minimum amount of movement. Their wide temperature range prevents bleeding in high temperature applications. It also uses in industry like roofing, flooring, mastics, pipe coatings, electrical applications.
