PVC was first prepared by the German chemist August Wilhelm von Hofmann in 1872, but another German chemist, Friedrich Heinrich August Klatte, in 1912 used sunlight to initiate the polymerization of vinyl chloride. Commercial application of the plastic was at first limited by its extreme rigidity.
In 1926, while trying to dehydrohalogenate PVC in a high-boiling solvent to obtain an unsaturated polymer that might bond rubber to metal, W.L.Semon, produced plasticized PVC. Finding this flexible, inert product was causes to success of the polymer. In 1930 by using plastic in shock-absorber seals, electric-wire insulation, and coated cloth products PVC gets popular.
What is Polyvinyl chloride?
Poly vinyl chloride (PVC) is the 3th most widely produced plastic, after polyethylene and polypropylene. PVC is used in construction Because is much effective than materials such as copper, iron or wood in pipe and profile uses. Adding plasticizers can make it softer and more flexible. PVC also used in clothing and upholstery, electrical cable insulation, inflatable products and many applications in which it replaces rubber.
Polyvinyl Chloride Properties:
PVC mostly made from salt and oil. In addition PVC can made without using oil.
substituting oil-derived hydrocarbon with bio-derived hydrocarbon feedstock. Therefore it is far less oil-dependent than other thermoplastics. It is also highly durable and energy efficient across a range of applications, which makes for an extremely effective use of raw materials.
salts have huge reserves in the world wide. Dissolved salt in the sea are over 50 quadrillion tonnes, also over 200billion tonnes available underground.
yearly uses of Ethylene from oil is 0.3%. in addition using ethylene from sugar crops for PVC production is also increasing
Products and bi-products of PVC manufacture include Chlorine and Caustic Soda, two of perhaps the most important manufacturing “ingredients” not only for PVC manufacture, but many other applications. Chlorine is used in medicine industry, much as 85% of pharmaceuticals. Caustic Soda also has many key, everyday applications, including the following applications: pulp and paper manufacture, soap and surfactant manufacture, detergents and cleaners, aluminia extraction, textiles and in the food industry
Main uses of PVC:
PVC is used in an wide range of household and industrial products, from raincoats and shower curtains to window frames and indoor plumbing.
In addition PVC has widely uses in production of water and chemical pipes, plastic windows and doors, packing film,
Plastic carpet, plastic ceiling, sanitary fitting, leatheroid, plastic wallpaper and etc.
1) Construction material: Piping, sheeting, windows and door.
2) Packing material
3) Electronical material: Cable, wire, tape, bolt
4) Furniture: Decorate material
5) Car material
- Great electrical insulation properties, ideal for cabling applications.
- Good impact strength and weatherproof attributes make it ideal for construction products.
- Easy provide, long lasting, tough and light.
- Consuming less primary energy during production than any of the other commodity plastics
